The book on the other hand spends more time on developing the idea of what constitutes good detective work. This creates more conflict and as a result, more of a climax to the story it is telling. The movie also gives you characters to root for and to root against. Although the end of the movie isn’t as shocking, it still creates a suspenseful story that is interesting. Part of the charm of the book was the ending no one would guess, making it a great mystery. Overall, the movie spends more time on developing characters and more predictable plot. Dupin needs to save a damsel in distress, adding more suspense. Another thing that changes is the character dynamics and development. The big way the movie scene with the evil doctor confrontation changes the overall story is that it adds a real motive behind the killing. In the book, the ending is just the men talking together and there is no big climax or tension between characters. The scene in the movie where Dupin faces the evil doctor never even happens in the book. In the book, the culprit of the crime was simply an orangutan that was on the loose and there were no real sinister or dark motives behind it. The ending of the movie is very different from the ending of the book. The movie adds more suspense, but takes away the mystery. In the book, Dupin was lead by a natural curiosity and interest of the crime. In the movie, Dupin solves this crime because he is personally invested in this crime and a lot is riding on him to figure it out fast. These changes Dupin’s motivation and interest. Instead of killing Camille, he carries her away to Mirakle’s lair. The movie stays true to how the ape gets into the building however, the ape only kills the mom. All is revealed right away, which in some ways ruins what was so great about the original story.Īnother big aspect the movie and book share is of course the part of murder in each of them. Due to Mirakle and the films constant attention of him, there is no real mystery. Mirakle at one point says,“I tell you I will prove your kinship with the ape.” It’s safe to say he has way darker intentions than the sailor. The effect this has is that the murders are no longer an accident but instead planned. Mirakle also wants people to get murdered and knows what it is that he’s doing. Although both characters worked with at least one form of monkey, Mirakle is made out to be an antagonist. Mirakle is a long ways away from the sailor. The biggest character adaption is the addition of Doctor Mirakle. The reader spends no time building a relationship with them. In the book, all the reader knows about the women is their murders. One, they make the characters seem more realistic and the viewer can be more easily invested in them. Dupin is not only less recluse but is also a medical student dating Camille, who was the murdered daughter in the book. Not only were couples added but identities of characters were greatly changed as well. The biggest example of difference in character relationships is the fact that the movie starts off with two couples. Not only are some characters added or taken away, but relationships are different as well. In the movie, this odd tale is twisted into something completely different from what it was in the book. No real justice is served seeing as there is no real villain in the story. The story ends with Dupin discovering that an orangutan was the culprit all along and he finds the sailor who was involved with the orangutan. However, Dupin does eventually get the narrator involved in uncovering the mystery. It’s fair to say that Dupin is the main force in the pair that drives forward the story as the narrator’s purpose seems more to just document the events. Dupin is the one who becomes interested in the killings of two women who were daughter and mother. This is also when the reader is introduced to the narrator and there is an explanation of how he and the detective Dupin met. In the book, it is started out by an analysis of the game chess. This is basically where the similarities end. Also, in both, Dupin is able to solve the mystery of a woman who was murdered and is given chances to show off some of his detective skills. The film like the book, took place in Paris in the mid-1800s and revolved around the detective, Dupin. The differences affect not only the plot but also the tone of the story as a whole.įirst up is the similarities between these two. This adaptation of Poe’s work had many changes to it and few similarities. Being such a popular book, it was eventually made into a movie in 1932. It is the first book of the mystery genre and was published in 1841. Edgar Allan Poe is a very versatile writer and a good example of this is his novel The Murders in the Rue Morgue.
